I had been seeing so many posts on Instagram about using spray foam as a medium to create sculptures and we just had to give it a go. This ended up being one of Nixie's absolute favourite sculptures that we did. For this one we took inspiration from Barbara Hepworth and made sure ours had holes in them like many of our favourites of hers although we decided to paint them in bright colours to match the inside of our house!

This was our first try at using spray foam and we definitely would like to do some more of these. We only used two cans but it would have been way much better if we would have had a couple more at hand!

Here's what you need:

  • spray foam (we used this one
  • steak knives
  • plaster of paris strips
  • bowl of water
  • scissors
  • wooden base
  • dowel to attach sculpture to base
  • drill

Here's How We Created Them:

  1. Make sure you do this outside on a piece of tarp and make sure you use gloves as this is so incredibly sticky and you don't want it touching your skin. Then all you do is spray it into whatever shapes you want.

  2. Next, leave to dry overnight then the fun part begins! Once dry begin to carve it into whatever shape you desire. we used steak knives for this part.

  3. Next, we used plaster of paris strips to wrap around our sculpture to make it stronger. (Kevin used plaster paste for his). Once this part is done add your bases to it by drilling a piece of dowel into the wood and then into your sculpture.

  4. Next it's time to paint them!
