When we started talking about all the different bodies of water that exist on our planet we talked a lot about the importance of keeping our water clean. Water is sacred and without we wouldn't be able to survive. One of the first things we did was learn about the difference between salt water and fresh water and how little freshwater actually exists so as a way to really show this we made a little polymer clay graph.

Polymer Clay Fresh vs Salt Water Graph

This proved to be a very good visual for Nixie as she was really shocked at how little fresh water there was on our planet.

DIY Oil Spill

We talked about the different ways our Oceans can become polluted and one of them was through an oil spill and how much damage that causes to wildlife. Nixie had a really hard time taking this in as she doesn't like hearing about upsetting things so we left any toy animals out of the experiment.

What You'll Need:

  • A container
  • water
  • blue & black food colouring
  • vegetable oil
  • lots of cotton

How To Do It:

  1. Begin by adding water to your container along with a few drops of blue food colouring. This is your Ocean.
  2. Now add your black food colouring to your oil and then begin to pour it into your ocean
  3. Now explain that this mimics what would happen if there was an oil spill in our ocean and how devastating it is for all the wildlife.
  4. ask them to clean it up using the cotton. They will see how hard it is and what a difficult process it is.
